TRA CIELO E TERRA: LA CONDIZIONE VEDOVILE A PALERMO NEL TARDO MEDIOEVO

Widows were victims of two stereotypes that opposed the holy widow, caste and charitable, to the immoral and lustful one. Beyond artistic and literary transfiguration, economic need guided the choices, while wealthy widows could decide whether and with whom to remarry, the poor ones got married to survive. Widowhood exemplifies contradictions of women’s condition. Preachers, relatives and clergymen created a network around the widows to help them and condition their earthly and spiritual choices. All the widows could assume guardianship of minor children and the wealthy ones entered the convents at an old age, after managing properties in the city and in the countryside, that were an indispensable source of income to endow daughters and grand-daughters. Childless widows founded and endowed convents.

Le vedove furono vittime di due opposti stereotipi che contrapponevano la santa vedova, casta e caritatevole, alla vedova immorale e lasciva. Al di là della trasfigurazione artistica e letteraria, le esigenze economiche orientavano le scelte, mentre le vedove facoltose decidevano se e con chi risposarsi, quelle povere prendevano marito per sopravvivere. La vedovanza esemplifica le contraddizioni della condizione femminile. Predicatori, parenti e religiosi creavano una rete attorno alle vedove per aiutarle e condizionarne le scelte terrene e spirituali. Tutte le vedove potevano assumere la tutela dei figli minori e quelle benestanti entravano in monastero in tarda età, dopo avere gestito le proprietà in città e in campagna, fonte di reddito indispensabile per dotare figlie e nipoti. Prive di figli fondavano e dotavano monasteri.
