The present doctoral thesis is dedicated to the subject of retabular carving in the first national baroque, with focus in the production of the city of Lisbon. Articulating two nuclear paths of investigation, the space-historical and the artistic, the main goals are the articulation of the social, economic and cultural characteristics of the regency and reign of D. Pedro II and of the initial years of that of D. João V and the recognition of the carving workshops of resident masters in Lisbon, their works, legal contractual procedures and dissemination of their production for the areas of influence of the capital. The carving works, still in its original place, those out of place or lost of Lisbon production, in virtue of natural causes or due to action of man, are listed and explained in two views: the historical one and the artistic one, associating informations of the most varied historical sources. The internal and external artistic influences, deserve distinction by the importance in the definition of the retable of National Style, produced by resident masters in the capital. In this way, similar arts such as the ceramic tiles, the marble inlay or the decorative painting, like those of the engravings, drawings and prints, have contributed with his special valencies for the development and consolidation of the art of carving in this first national baroque. |
