An Adult Workshop On Re-thinking Death. An anthropological experience of lifelong education through the taboo of the end of life

Abstract

This article originates from the organization of two workshops in the anthropology of death, addressed to volunteers of the ADAMO association1 in Civitavecchia (Italy). This non-governmental organization gathers people wishing to use their free time to support terminal patients: ADAMO members accompany these patients to the local hospital for therapies, medical exams and follow-up visits; they also provide in-home care, both medical and psychological, as well as assistance in navigating the bureaucracy, and in the transportation of medications. The association has a kindergarten, providing free baby-sitting in case of a parent’s disease, and a center where meetings and lectures are periodically organized to support patients and relatives. They also provide fund-raising events and the coordination of all patients’ requests.
