Industrial storage rack systems are usually thin walled, cold formed steel structures made up of “Boxed” or “Channel” beams engaged to the upright perforations by means of “L Shaped” beam-end-connectors. The connections rely on a number of hooks to provide stiffness and ductility. Due to ease of installation of the typical beam to upright connections, construction process in rack industry is much faster than that of the conventional steel structures, however unlike structural connections, plastic hinges occur in beam end connectors not in the beams away from the connections. This paper first presents experimental observation of beam to upright connections, for different beam – upright configurations. The effect of key parameters such as beam depth, beam width and the upright thickness on the behaviour of boltless beam to upright connections is presented. Finally, a bi-linear model that approximates the moment rotation curve was developed and compared against the test results.
