The Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engi-neering Research (MCEER) and the National Center forResearch on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) havehad a research collaboration agreement to carry outfundamental earthquake engineering research in areasof mutual interest since 1995. Shortly after the 921earthquake, we, as representatives of the two Centers, discussed the possibility of an MCEER-NCREEworkshop,which subse-quently tookplace on Oct.3-5, 1999 inTaiwan. Thepurpose of the workshop was to identify importantshort-term strategies/actions for post-earthquakerestoration and research needs, including specificcooperative projects for investigators from both centersto work as teams based on the 921 experience.
