| 内容記述 | 本論文では、自身のテーマである〈近世期のキリシタン信仰の心性史研究〉の一環として、宣教師たちの書簡を中心とした調査をまとめ、その考察を行った。筆者はこれまで、綿密なフィールド・ワークを基にして、現代のかくれキリシタン信仰の研究を行ってきた。現在の彼らの特異な信仰形態は、潜伏期にキリシタンたちを取り巻いていた環境とそれらとの文化摩擦から生じたものである。「取り巻いていた環境」とは、「幕府」「庶民（町人・農民）」そして「宣教師」たちである。彼らが潜伏下のキリシタンとどう向き合い、伝道を行ったのかについては、資史料調査からも明らかにすることができる。文字として記された当時の状況から、「文字では記されなかった」心性についての考察を進めるのが、筆者の書簡研究の目的である。 本論文での分析から、従来のキリシタン信仰史の区分の再考を促すことができた。本論文で扱った時期は、前述の区分でいう「キリシタン期」と「潜伏キリシタン期」の中間の時代である。キリシタン弾圧が始まる中、信仰を隠す者と「信仰の魂を見せる」とし、信仰を告白して、処罰される者などが入り混じった時代である。そのような歴史的背景を持つ時代であるため、本論中で扱った時代を、「過渡期」という一時代と考えることもできるのではないだろうかと述べた。 そのように、宣教師の書簡研究は、従来のキリシタン信仰史に新たなアプローチを可能にするものであるといえよう。折しも、2017 年1 月21 日に遠藤周作の小説『沈黙』をマーティン・スコセッシ監督が映画化した『沈黙 －サイレンス－』が劇場公開され、キリシタンの中でも、特に江戸期の潜伏キリシタンと宣教師との関係について国内外で注目が集まりつつある。宣教師たちが潜伏下のキリシタンとどのように向き合い、伝道を行ったのかを明らかにした本研究は、それゆえに、キリシタン研究という領域にとどまらず、今後のキリシタンに関する認識をより事実に即したものにするための第一歩であったといってよい。 |

| 内容記述 | As part of the authorʼs research theme on the history of mentalities of modern-era Kirishitan（ Christian） beliefs, this paper presents the results of study and analysis of letters and materials written by missionaries. Until now, meticulous fieldwork has been the basis of the authorʼs study of contemporary kakure Kirishitans （hidden Christians）. Their current unique form of belief developed from the circumstances which forced them to go underground, along with the cultural frictions that resulted from their situation. Those involved relationships and interactions with the bakufu （shogunate government）, commoners （townspeople and farmers）, and missionaries. The letters and documents left by the missionaries reveal the way they interacted with the Senpuku Kirishitans and of their missionary activities. My goal in researching the written materials of this period is to cast light on the history of mentalities which were left unrecorded in written form. As an outcome of the analysis presented in this study, the author urges a reconsideration of the presently designated historical stages of Kirishitan beliefs. This study covers a period between the Kirishitan and Senpuku Kirishitan stages. The persecution of Kirishitans began in this period ; some responded by concealing their faith while others confessed their belief and accepted punishment as a “demonstration of the Christian soul.” With this historical background, the author suggests that this period can be viewed as a transitional stage between the two currently designated stages. Therefore, the study of the missionariesʼ letters can be called a departure from traditional research methods and indicates a new approach in understanding the history of Kirishitan religion. Coincidentally, the movie “Silence,” which was directed by Martin Scorsese and is based on Shusaku Endoʼs novel “Chinmoku,” premiered on January 21, 2017, and the relationship between the Senpuku Kirishitans and missionaries in the Edo period is particularly beginning to attract interest, both in Japan and abroad. This study has enabled a better understanding of how the missionaries interacted with the Senpuku Christians and engaged in missionary activities, and thus reaches outside of the academic boundaries of Kirishitan studies and can be described as the first step in gaining a more realistic understanding of Kirishitans. | |||||
