Abstract
The purposes of this pilot research study are to investigate the effect of a classroom-based intervention on preschoolers with mild disabilities in a community early childhood setting, and to identify strategies and procedures that enhance the scientific evaluation of the intervention’s effectiveness. Known as Therapy Outreach Programme (TOP), it was initiated to reach out to at-risk children and their families by Department of Child Development (DCD) at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) in 2006. The Brigance K & 1 Screen-II was used as pre-post developmental measures for the participants and behavioral observation was conducted using a single subject A-B with maintenance design. The results from the 3 participants indicated minimal intervention effects on their overall development and target behaviors, which were speaking English in class and maintaining intentional eye contact during lesson. The documentation of this programme and outcomes of this study offer insights and research evidence for modifications needed to improve the delivery of the TOP and to improve future research of the program.
