|
In this paper, the function of the punch line paratone in the Japanese Kobanashi stories is phonetically analyzed. In this framework, the main concern is on the pitch contour and the pause. As Brown and Yule (1983: 100) describe, "At the beginning of a paratone, the speaker typically uses an introductory expression to announce what he specifically intends to talk about. … The end of a Paratone … can be marked by very low pitch, loss of amplitude, and a lengthy pause." From the functional viewpoint, the punch line paratone can be defined as the identification of the end of the story.
