Images of monstrous races such as `dog-headed people' or `cynocephali' always bring us to the world of wonders and stimulate the curiosity of modern minds that have long since enclosed such images in the category of fantasy. Al-Qazwīnī's cosmography of marvels, compiled in Arabic in the thirteenth century, includes many images of monsters deemed to live somewhere in the islands of the Indian Oceans or the eastern world. Much has already been written on the ʿAjāʾib (wonders) tradition of literature and the veracity of such accounts, yet the process whereby motifs of monstrous creatures have become visualized in the Islamic world remains unclear. This paper presents an in-depth view of this pictorial tradition and the process of transmission underlying the depiction of monstrous images that appeared in the earliest codex of al-Qazwīnī's Wonders of Creation. 13世紀に編纂されたカズウィーニーの百科全書『被造物の驚異と万物の珍奇』には,犬頭族など異形の種族についての記述があり,挿絵でその姿が示されている。これら異形の身体を持つ種族は古典文学にその起源を求めることができるとされるが,イスラーム世界で図像として視覚化されるプロセスはよく分かっていない。ミュンヘンに所蔵される現存最古の『被造物の驚異』写本(1280年)の挿絵は,イスラーム世界で描かれた異形の身体の図像としては初期のものと考えられており,本稿ではその絵画描写から図像形成の背景にあるものを分析する。
