Abstract
"This research is important because it addresses the ongoing disparity that women in Atlantic
Canada face (compared to men) in relation to wages and, consequently, parental benefits.
This issue is particularly urgent for women in low-paid and non-standard work, including
those in seasonal, part-time, temporary and short term contract positions. Women dominate
these types of employment sectors and therefore find it more difficult to meet eligibility
requirements for Employment Insurance, and for maternal and parental benefits. The same
women often find it financially impossible to take time off for a year to care for young children.
These are important issues related to womenà à à à ¢ s economic autonomy and the particular
vulnerability of economically marginalized women."
