The Role of Analogy in the Natural Theology of Richard Swinburne
Abstract
Rozprawa przedstawia teologię naturalną Richarda Swinburne’a, ukazuje jej oryginalność i rolę, jaką pełni w niej analogia. Układ rozdziałów odzwierciedla przyjętą przez Swinburne’a argumentację na rzecz teizmu chrześcijańskiego jako teorii wyjaśniającej istnienie świata. Rozdział pierwszy zawiera ogólną charakterystykę teologii naturalnej ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem specyfiki podejścia Swinburne’a, który odwołuje się do wyjaśniania naukowego według modelu nomologiczno-dedukcyjnego Carla Hempela. Swinburne modyfikuje ten model rozszerzając go o wyjaśnianie osobowe, gdzie przekonania, zamiary, racje, pragnienia i zdolności podmiotu pełnią rolę przyczynową w zaistnieniu stanów rzeczy podlegających wyjaśnieniu. Rozdział drugi dotyczy analizy znaczeń kluczowych terminów teologicznych odnoszonych do Boga, a mających swoje odpowiedniki w mowie potocznej. Swinburne postuluje zasadniczo pozostawienie zwyczajnego znaczenia słów użytych w funkcji języka religijnego. Szczególnym przypadkiem użycia analogicznego jest termin osoba. Jest to analogia kluczowa dla wykazania spójności chrześcijańskiej nauki o Bogu. Rozdział trzeci rozważa argumenty Swinburne’a na rzecz istnienia Boga definiowanego w terminach teologii chrześcijańskiej z uwzględnieniem wnioskowania przez analogię. Teizm chrześcijański ma większe od konkurencyjnych hipotez wyjaśniających prawdopodobieństwo prawdziwości.
The dissertation presents Richard Swinburne’s natural theology, showing its originality and the role analogy plays in it. The order of the chapters reflects Swinburne’s argumentation for Christian theism as a theory explaining the existence of the world. The first chapter contains a general description of natural theology with a focus on Swinburne’s specific application of Hempel’s nomological-deductive model of scientific explanation. Swinburne adjusts it to personal explanation in which the agent’s beliefs, purposes, desires and powers are causative in bringing about the state of matters subject to explanation. The second chapter deals with analysis of the meaning of key theological terms pertaining to God and their counterparts in ordinary language. Swinburne postulates retaining the normal senses of the words used in religious language. The term person is a special case that requires analogical meaning. The analogy between God and the human person is crucial for the coherence of the Christian doctrine about God. The third chapter looks at Swinburne’a arguments for the existence of God, who is defined in the terms of Christian theology, attention being paid to reasoning by analogy. Christian theism is shown to be more probably true than rival explanatory hypotheses of the fact of the world.
