Abstract

Tea and fisheries industries are confronted with challenges in meeting various standards when accessing markets abroad. Although costs of compliance with new standards are more tangible than benefits, food safety standards can promote less wastage and greater productivity as well as better access to markets or particular market segments. However, there is concern over rising standards which marginalize the position of smaller players, especially producers, and manufacturers. Government assistance has been requested by the tea and fisheries exporters interviewed, in financial support for upgrading their facilities, infrastructure development, technical and legal support, to conform to standards in the export markets.
