Subject Population: A convenience sample of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus will be recruited from a primary care clinic in north central West Virginia. Participants must be between the ages of 20 and 64, read and speak English, and have had a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus for at least one year.
Research Design: A descriptive, correlational design will be used to examine the relationship between diabetes-related distress and self-management based on the appraisal of diabetes as a threat, harm, or challenge. Diabetes-related distress, appraisal of diabetes, and self-management will be described, and the moderating effect of the appraisal of diabetes on the relationship between diabetes-related distress and self-management will be tested in a sample of rural Appalachians with type 2 diabetes.
Instruments: The following measures will be used: Problem Areas in Diabetes (PAID) scale, Cognitive Appraisal of Health Scale (CAHS), Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA), the Newest Vital Sign (NVS), Patient Health Questionnaire for Depression and Anxiety (PHQ-4), a demographic form, and a medical record data collection form.
Procedure: Participants will be recruited, screened, and consented in the clinic. Measures will be administered to the participant, and data will be collected from the medical record. All information will be de-identified and analyzed by the researcher.
