We analysed the blood culture (BC) result reporting at a small general hospital by a two-year comparison of on-site (year 2018) and off-site (year 2017) microbiology laboratory testing statuses. We observed that the turnaround times decreased and the positivity rates increased for the BCs processed in 2018 compared to those of 2017, and these differences were statistically significant. Our findings suggest that suboptimal preanalytical conditions, including delayed BC processing, may have negatively affected the BC outcomes in 2017.
