How did Italian intellectuals react to the hypothesis about the influence of Arabic and Islamic culture on the literary production of Italian "supreme poet" Dante Alighieri? This article attempts to answer this question by following the historical debate between the supporters of this hypothesis and its opponents, starting from Guido Vernani, who had Dante's De Monarchia burned in public in 1326, until Maria Corti's thesis.
