Distribution and growth, technology and development. Reflections on Nino Andreatta's theoretical analysis

From the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s Nino Andreatta was keenly interested in the theoretical problems of income distribution and the choice of technology related to economic growth and devel-opment. The reflections in this article stem from his 1958 analysis on Income distribution and capital accumulation, in the form of a stylized interpretation of Andreatta’s thought as a political economist. In this light , his theoretical analyses are reinterpreted with particular attention to the effects of innovation on income distribution and prices in relation to different types of markets. In his 1958 monograph Andreatta fleshes out one of his theoretical approaches which he uses to elaborate and publish various writings, some are are discussed herein, with a focus on three main themes. The first theme regards how the choice of methods and the related intersectoral aspects of technology adopted in one sector influence the development of other sectors. The second theme, planning, is viewed especially in relation to developing countries. The third theme concerns that of the economics of research aimed at identifying new development strategies. The man who emerges from this analysis is an authoritative economist with a strong theoretical background, and a very eclectic post-Keynesian approach, influenced primarily by Classical theory with a minor influx of Schumpeterian theory, yet without a priori preclusions of other theoretical approaches.
