Biblioteche e cultura del clero nelle pievi verbanesi del secondo Cinquecento. Angera, Brebbia-Besozzo e Leggiuno

The article sets out to investigate the book learning of the Lombard clergy living on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore at the time of Saint Charles Borromeo. The institution of the vicariati of Angera, Brebbia and Leggiuno is presented as a first step in the path of reform, made necessary by the low cultural level of the pastoral clergy at the time of the appointment of Borromeo as Archbishop of Milan. This is followed by a comprehensive analysis of the 32 book inventories contained in the records of the Visite Pastorali in the Archivio Storico Diocesano of Milan, most of them compiled during the visit conducted by the Archbishop's delegate Bernardino Tarugi in 1578-1579. The general picture that emerges from this analysis shows a tendency to improvement of clerical learning, more and more focused on the revival of biblical knowledge and on a consistent use of devotional literature. Evidence of deficiencies and resistances of various kinds, however, is not lacking. On the basis of available sources, finally, some attention is paid on the education of the clergy, with the help of statistical data referring to 1578 and 1579.

Oggetto del contributo è la cultura libraria del clero ambrosiano del Lago Maggiore nel secondo Cinquecento, durante l’episcopato di san Carlo Borromeo. In un primo momento viene presentata l’istituzione dei vicariati di Angera, Brebbia e Leggiuno come primo passo sul cammino delle riforme, accennando alla scarsa preparazione culturale dei preti in cura d’anime, chiaramente riscontrabile agli inizi dell’età borromaica. Vengono quindi esaminati nel loro insieme trentadue inventari di libri reperibili nel fondo Visite Pastorali dell’Archivio Storico Diocesano di Milano, censiti per la maggior parte nella visita del delegato arcivescovile Bernardino Tarugi (1578-1579). Da essi emerge il quadro generale di una cultura ecclesiastica in via di rinnovamento, sempre più incentrata sul recupero delle Sacre Scritture e sull’uso consolidato della letteratura devota. Non mancarono, tuttavia, lacune e resistenze di vario genere, di cui si forniscono esempi documentati. Infine, sulla base delle fonti disponibili, si passa ad illustrare alcuni aspetti legati alla formazione dei chierici, fornendo dati statistici relativi agli anni 1578-1579.
