Abstract
Examines obstacles standing in the way of a U.S.-Soviet arms control treaty and congressional pressure to develop the MGM-134 "Midgetman" missile.
Description
In this episode host Peter Krogh discusses arms control and U.S. defense policy with Richard Perle, Assistant Secretary of Defense under President Reagan. After nearly six years in office, a U.S.-Soviet arms control agreement remained elusive for President Reagan. Despite a period of renewed summitry with the Russians, numerous obstacles remained for the administration's defense policy, including pressure from Congress to develop the MGM-134 "Midgetman" Missile, a small, mobile intercontinental ballistic missile. In this conversation Perle, widely regarded as one of President Reagan's most effective and adroit advisors, examines the issues standing in the way of an arms control agreement between the United States and Soviet Union, as well as prospects for the Midgetman missile.
