Abstract
This project investigates the stakes of the biomedicalization of women's bodies and (in)fertility. While I argue, using Foucault, that women feel a compulsion to reproduce genetically rather than adopt, I argue that the same technoscientific advances used to treat infertility are being used to further stratify women across lines of race and class through surrogacy programs. While previous theory has critiqued the idealization of motherhood, I propose feminist theory look to queer theory to critique instead the idealization of genetic reproduction, to critique what I term compulsory procreativity.
