Abstract
Recent interest in children's rights has led to a rejection of the presumption of total incompetency of minors prior to the legal age of majority. Colburn-Rohn, an educational consultant, cites authorities in several disciplines to develop a model for allowing variable competence in decision making based upon developmental levels and experience, with actual competency to be enhanced by systematic education in making choices. She proposes use of the elements of informed consent as one mechanism for learning to make educated decisions, and discusses a case of treating hyperkinesis to illustrate the process. (KIE abstract)
