Abstract
Two bills pending before Congress are aimed at improving the procurement of organs for transplantion and at financing the costs of transplant surgery and related drug therapy. The plight of children dying from liver disease has generated congressional, presidential, media, and public interest in the scarcity of organs and the expense of treatment. The provisions of the legislation introduced by Representative Albert Gore (D-Tenn.) and Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) are detailed, and the differing opinions of physicians, other legislators, and professional organizations concerned with transplantation are discussed.
