Abstract
In the first of two articles on the teaching of terminal care to fourth-year medical students at Queen's University of Belfast, the planner and coordinator of the course describes the objectives and curriculum of the program, which involves the departments of community medicine, general practice, geriatric medicine, and mental health. Areas in which students are taught to develop appropriate skills and attitudes include reactions of the patient, family, and student to death and dying, disclosure of impending death, pain relief, and terminal care in home, hospital and hospice environments.
