Abstract
In the aftermath of the London Hospital's controversial suspension of obstetrician Wendy Savage in a dispute concerning her women-centered childbirth practices, the Royal Society of Medicine's Forum on Maternity and the Newborn on 22 March 1986 discussed the manner in which the medical profession deals with dissenters. Raanan Gillon of the Institute of Medical Ethics, London, analyzed the ethical dimensions of the case in terms of justice to Dr. Savage and the squandering of scarce resources on the inquiry. Professor D. Hepple, a lawyer, and Dr. Rosemary Rue, a regional medical officer, examined the process of suspension as it relates to senior National Health Service employees. Dr. Luke Zander, a general practitioner who chaired the Forum, expressed concern about the unwillingness of senior gynecologists to listen to the views of their generalist colleagues on the Savage case.
