Abstract
Conclusion: This case highlights one function of ethics consultation, to assist in determining decision-making capacity. It demonstrates the importance of knowing the patient's narrative when assessing the patient's decision-making capacity. While ethics consultants are not uniquely skilled at obtaining a patient's narrative, other members of the health-care team sometimes fail to realize the importance of the patient's story. What initially appeared to be an irrational decision by a "mildly mentally retarded" patient became quite reasonable after the patient's full story was known.
