ABSTRACT: The relationship between infrastructure investments and the results in terms of development are one of the most common topics in the recent economic research. Given the diversity of ways in which the components of an economy can be disaggregated and the existing limitation of economic resources, it is increasingly important to consider the returns of the incoming investments and focus on those projects or activities known to report greater benefits for society.
For this reason, it is necessary to show the importance that the economic impact studies of infrastructures have. These provide us with a measuring tool to compare how investments in the different productive sections affect the heterogeneity of goods and services that an entire economy integrates, in order to efficiently manage existing infrastructures and also to optimize the newly building ones in the best possible way.
The main purpose of this work is to explain how infrastructures and their associated activities affect production, income and employment levels of a region, and more specifically seaports and airports, due to the growing importance of logistics and its unique globalizing nature.
