The American Association of State Highways and Transportation Officials”.
ABSTRACT: In this thesis it has been performed the evaluation of the state of conservation and
resistance capacity of the Pedro de Valdivia bridge, located east of southern Chile in the capital of the Region of the Rivers, Valdivia.
This bridge was designed by the engineer Federico Wiese and was built in 1954. It has five spans. The lateral spans have 35 metres of length and were built, after of the earthquake of 1960, with beams of mixed steel-concrete type . And three central spans compose of reinforced concrete beams.
This study is focused on the central spans. This have 69 metres of length from the central reach and 50 metres from the lateral reach. The central reach is a girder with variable edge box - shaped cross – section of reinforced concrete. In the central span of this section two ball joints have been arranged which convert it into a Gerber type beam.
The bridges that have been studied, considering that they may have a certain relationship with the idea of a bridge that the engineer Federico Wiese assumes in his design are: the bridge over the Peixe River of 1931, in Brazil; and the bridge over the River Leyes of 1941, in Argentina. The main similarities are the length of its spans, the type of section, the material used and the Gerber beam concept
Regarding the evaluation of the state of conservation of the bridge, the different non- destructive tests that can be carried out on the reinforced concrete bridges and the results obtained in the report on their state of conservation have been studied. It can be noticed that the main problem the bridge presents, which could affect its useful life, is carbonation.
For the evaluation of the resistance capacity of the bridge, it’s been used the Manual for the Evaluation of Bridges published by "The American Association of State Highways and Transportation Officials". Also, a review has been made with different methods that are defined in this manual, choosing the Method of Load Factors and Resistance, because it considers the redundancy of the superstructure and the deterioration of the elements through the application of a condition factor that modifies its resistance. The Manual for the Evaluation of bridges indicates that the methodology for the load and resistance factor rating of bridges is composed of three distinct procedures: Design load rating, legal load and permit load rating. However, in this study the analysis of the capacity of the Pedro de Valdivia bridge has been performed with the design load rating method.
A model has been developed on the Sofistik software to determine the effects of design and the nominal resistance of each cross – sections. With this, the data obtained in the model has been made a verification of the structural capacity of each cross- section through the calculate the Rating Factor.
Finally, it has been determined which cross – section has the most critical resistance at both bending moment and shear stress, reaching to the conclusion that the shear resistance of the bridge is enough for all sections, except for the section of the outer piles; while the value obtained from the RF at bending moment is less than 1 in the most representative sections,
having the most critical resistance at the section located at the central zone of the lateral span.
