The insertion / deletion Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) polymorphism has an impact on physical performance. D variant has been associated with improvements in performance and power sports locally on a strengthening of the muscular component. Football referees represent a homogeneous population based on their physical requirements, they maintain a high performance physical activity into old age, which allows to study the influence of polymorphism in performance. In the present study, analyzed the distribution of ACE polymorphism and their influence on physical performance on relationship with the age of variant D of this polymorphism, in the soccer referees of the Spanish Professional Football League during the 2015/2016 course. The results show a greater presence of the D allele in assistant referees regarding umpires. On the other hand, differences in physical performance between age groups in both populations were obtained, the Juniors groups perform tests in less than the time Seniors. In addition, umpires Seniors, genotyped as DD perform the speed test in an average time of less than genotype II.
The differences in the physical demands during the game between referees and assistants and the relationship of variant D with power sports explain the differences in the distribution of allele D between the two populations. Meanwhile, the variant D, associated with increased muscle strengthening, explain that referees older maintain better physical condition, translated into a maintenance times for the speed test. Generically, we could conclude that the variant D determines a positive selective for assistant referees. In umpires, this variant could have a modulating effect on the loss of fitness due to the passage of age
