Abstract
Nanoscience and Cancer Biology are currently being combined in pharmaceutical research to help lead the fight against diseases such as cancer. The engineering of nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery has been a major component of this, largely due to the Enhanced Permeation and Retention effect. This paper proposes a new method for preparing alginate nanoparticles for drug delivery, using a water-in-oil emulsion method and utilizing alginate’s capability of cross-linking with calcium. While particles of the desired size were successfully synthesized, repeatability was unable to be obtained within the scope of this research. In addition, this thesis studies an established platform of gold nanoclusters, with the intent of encapsulating the gold nanoclusters within the alginate particles in future experiments.
