Abstract
Social support is essential to an individual’s overall mental and physical health. Individuals with strong social support networks have been found to have better mental health as compared with individuals with less social support. Individuals with a better support network often also have developed better coping mechanisms. Individuals with prominent and positive coping mechanisms often have a lower chance of dealing with adverse mental and physical health, and are also able to confront issues related to adverse events in an effective manner. Social support is measured with the MSPSS (Zimet et al., 1988). In the current study the MSPSS was translated into Spanish and administered to a Spanish elderly sample. We conducted EFA to analyze the validity of the translation of the MSPSS in a Spanish elderly sample. Analyses showed that the scale has high validity, however, the number of factors differed from the original scale developed by Zimet (1988). The difference in factors can be attributed to cultural and lingual differences between samples.
