Abstract :
[en] These courses explor the geopolitical upheavals brought about by the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 (German reunification, the collapse of communism, the break-up of the USSR, the end of the Cold War, etc.) and their consequences on the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEECs), which turned westwards (to the EU and NATO) as they sought to transition to the rule of law and a market economy in a new area of Euro-Atlantic security rooted in multilateralism.

This course is a self-paced course designed for UNIVERSEH (H2020 - 101035795) with the objective of providing a basic grounding in modern and contemporary European history. It demonstrates how European society has evolved and changed from the early nineteenth century to the present regarding economic, social, political and cultural development.
The learning objectives are to provide the students with knowledge of Europe’s history from the early 19th century until the present and develop their understanding of crucial historical contexts which have contributed to the shaping of Europe into what it is today, as well as to equip the students with initial proficiency in study techniques.
Learning outcomes: On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- understanding modern and contemporary European history from the early 19th century to the present;
- understanding critical historical contexts from a European perspective, as well as turning points and continuities
