Buried and initially coalified trunks of Quercus robur occur frequently in sands of the Holocene alluvial plain of the Labe River (central Bohemia, Czech Republic). Three different suites of bioerosive traces can be presumed in the wood: (1) those made probably by ligniperdous fungi during the life of the trees; (2) insect borings made by insect larvae in dead wood before its burial. They can bear perfectly preserved tracemakers in situ; (3) insect borings made after the re-burial of the trunks. The above-mentioned instances cannot be always recognized with certainty; moreover, all tunnel-shaped and camerate borings can be squatted by ants, beetles and less frequently by other representatives of arthropods. Notably, none of the traces found can be attributed to the phase of submergence of wood in fresh water, i.e. wood borings analogous to the Teredolites ichnofacies were not found.
