Coal seam erosion, clastic dykes penetrating coal seams, and studies coal clasts occurring in Late Paleozoic basin are used to demonstrate that coalification to the rank of subbituminous and bituminous coal occurred rapidly at shallow depth in some parts of the Variscan orogen, implying a precondition of high paleotemperatures for the coal basins.

Eroze uhelných slojí, klastické žíly protínající uhelné sloje a studované uhelné klasty vyskytující se v paleozoických pánvích subbituminosního a bituminosního uhlí svědčí o jejich rychlém uložení v malé hloubce některých částí Variského orogenu s vyšší paleoteplotou.
