Very long chain fatty acids (FAs), important components of different classes of lipids in all organisms from bacteria to man, include also, usually as minor components, odd-numbered FAs. These have been given little attention because of technical difficulties inherent in their detection and identification. Modern analytical methods such as GC–MS and/or LC–MS make this detection and identification possible. This review brings most of the currently available information about these FAs, their occurrence in different organisms, their structure and other properties

Mastné kyseliny s velmi dlouhým řetězcem jsou minoritními složkami mastných kyselin. Dosud jim byla věnována malá pozornost vzhledem k obtížím při jejich detekci a identifikaci. Moderní analytické metody, jak např. GC–MS a/nebo LC–MS umožňují tuto detekci a identifikaci. Tento přehledný článek přináší většinu současně dostupných informací o těchto MK, jejich výskytu v různých organismech, struktuře a dalších vlastnostech
