Die Autoren stellen fest, daß die modernen Massenmedien zwar transnational wirken, sie bleiben jedoch - angesichts der Traditonen und Sprache - in den nationalen Kontexten tief verwurzelt. Sie konzentrieren sich auf den politischen Einfluss der Medien und ihren Anteil an der fundamentalen Politisierung der mitteleuropäischen Gesellschaften im 19. Jahrhundert, bzw. an ihrer Instrumentalisierung durch die Diktaturen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Ferner sind auch Aspekte der Beziehungsgeschichte thematisiert, z. B. wie die Medien die Vorstellungen und Bilder der Tschechen, Deutschen und Slowaken voneinander formieren.

The authors explain, that the modern mass media, while trans-national in effect, always remain linked to a national context due to language and traditions. The focus is on the political pontetional of the media and their importance for the fundamental politization of Central European societies during the 19th century being assesed as well as their being exploited by the dictatorships of the 20th century. The study examines also how the media shaped the pictures which Czechs, Germans and Slovaks had of one another.
