Hypoxanthine-guanine-xanthine phosphoribosyltransferase (HGXPRT), as a purine salvage enzyme essential for replication and survival of Plasmodium parasites causing malaria, is an established target for the discovery of new anti-malarial drugs. Acyclic nucleoside phosphonates were shown to inhibit the growth of Plasmodium falciparum in erythrocyte culture.
