Il termine "lamia" aveva due significati nell'età classica: un mostro femminile dalla duplice natura, umana e animale, e un tipo di squalo. Gli autori medievali descrivono la lamia ancora attraverso altri attributi e il termine significa anche il demone notturno, un predatore sconosiuto, una iena, un nefasto volatile notturno, un tipo di animale domestico e le donne o i mostri marini con zampe di cavallo.

The term "lamia" had two meanings in the classical period: a female monster of bestial behaviour and of physical characteristic of an animal, or a shark. In the Middle Ages, new meanings of the word appear and the term designs various creatures: a night demon, an unidentifiable quadruped, a hyena,a terrifying nocturnal flying creature, o domesctic animal and a female or sea monster with horse legs.
