The study deals with iron production in the La Tene period (in Bohemia), the possibilities of its recognition with the help of surface survey projects and its ecological demands. A model of iron consumption of a rural community and estimations of an amount of wood necessary for its production enable to create a hypothesis about non destructive nature of iron smelting which probably did not influence a forest cover around production sites in a substantial way.
