Application of membrane reactor can improve the conversion of the catalytic processes considerably. In a wide range of applications and more particularly for environmental application, significant progresses have being made on membrane development. The feasibility on laboratory scale has been demonstrated for membrane reactor technology since 20 years. The final stage of the research is a development of catalytic membrane reactor devoted to abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are known as one of the major contributors to air pollution. They may have short and long-term adverse health effects, act as greenhouse gases and are the major source of ground-level ozone, which is the primary constituent of the photochemical smog. The destruction of VOCs is a great challenge and also of great industrial importance. Our aim is to investigate the catalytic oxidation of toluene in a membrane reactor used in a flow-through contactor configuration. In this case, the gas mixture of reactants is forced to go through the membrane, i.e. through the catalytic pores. The first part of the study focus on simple toluene (for comparison also ethanol) oxidation, using Zr-Ce based catalysts.
