A number of mainstream methods of data collection are available in psychological research, such as performance tests, questionnaires, observations of behavior, interviews, and experiments. However, spoken or written texts have also been an authentic source of data in psychological research and assessment since the early years when psychology was established as a scientific discipline. The main albeit sometimes implicit assumption underlying methodologies that use textual data is that meaning is a phenomenon of the utmost importance for understanding the human psyche. There has been a growing interest in discursive, dialogical, postmodern, or poststructuralist methodologies in the course of the last decades. Despite being useful and inspiring, these recent approaches often overlook older perspectives that had unfortunately never acquired sufficient interest among psychologists. This chapter presents selected approaches to text analysis from the beginning of the 20th century to the present, namely, linguistic approaches using primarily quantitative content analytical techniques, such as word or phrase frequencies usually based on coding manuals, as well as constructivist approaches based mostly on qualitative methods. The objective of the chapter is to highlight similarities and contrasts among different analytical techniques and to present a general as well as complex framework for these techniques, with Greimas’ semiotic analysis of narrative stories as a possible starting point.
