Conservation of architectural structures using lime binders is currently an important research topic aiming compatibility, durability and sustainability. In this study, lime (L) and lime-metakaolin (LM) mortars were prepared with the addition of water-repellent admixtures: linseed oil, stand oil and a silane based water-repellent. Experimental results demonstrate that oil imparts higher hydrophobicity to both L and LM mixtures. Durability was assessed through freeze-thaw and NaCl crystallization cycles. Stand oil granted higher frost resistance to LM mortar, whereas in L mixture it was the linseed oil which granted better performance. L mortars with oil showed better results towards NaCl crystallization cycles, whereas silane was better for the LM mixture. The results point out that the selection of a water-repellent admixture must be done according to the type of binder and to the most important weathering phenomena acting where the materials are to be applied. The results indicate that linseed oil can be an environmentally- friendly alternative to synthetic water-repellents.
