Monografie shrnuje výsledky výzkumu meziskupinových postojů a kontaktu v pěti zemích střední Evropy. Věnuje se národním stereotypům neboli představám o typických vlastnostech představitelů určitých národů. Srovnává postoje k vlastnímu a sousedním národům a odhaluje faktory, které je ovlivňují. Zabývá se vnímáním Čechů, Němců, Rakušanů, Poláků a Slováků nejen během vzájemných setkání. Kniha je určena všem zájemcům o problematiku vztahů mezi lidmi z různých zemí. Autorský kolektiv tvoří badatelky několika národností, jejichž rozdílné kulturní a výzkumné zázemí obohatilo výzkum vztahů mezi obyvateli středoevropského regionu.

The book introduces outcomes of a long-term research project dealing with intergroup relations between five Central European countries – the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Poland, and Slovakia. The monograph is divided into six chapters covering various aspects of intergroup attitudes and contact in the Central European region. The first chapter reviews theoretical background in psychology of intergroup relations and personality psychology in cross-cultural perspective. The second chapter discusses methodological aspects of the research project, respondents’ samples, methods employed for measuring the concepts of interest and for analyzing data. In the third chapter, we focus on cognitive part of intergroup attitudes, stereotypes. The fourth chapter deals with the affective part of intergroup attitudes, participants’ evaluation of and feelings towards their own country and four neighboring countries. A major source of influence shaping outgroup attitudes is intergroup contact with outgroup members. The nature of intergroup contact in cross-border encounters in Central Europe is the focus of the fifth chapter. The sixth chapter introduces the analyses of participants’ experiences with foreign nationals using qualitative approach. Employing techniques of thematic and critical discourse analysis, the authors examined open statements from dyads representing two sides of a border in four border regions of the Czech Republic and its neighboring countries.
