The chapter focuses on political deveopments in the Czech Republic following the break-up of Czechoslovakia in 1992. It concludes that it took longer than elsewhere before the Czechs stopped identifying with Czechoslovakia strongly and before the party spectrum opened up to the segment of ad-hoc, anti-corruption actors known in other countries. On the other hand, i tis argued that long-term trends — such as the Czech inclination to anti-political thinking about public administration, the tradition of weak presidential powers bestowed by the constitution—and yet the real-life presidents often enjoy strong positions in the political process, and using references to historical issues and to “past guilt”in politics — remain integral parts of Czech politics.
