Both nanoparticles (NPs) ans microRNA (miRNA) molecules represent hot topics of the current research. Nanotoxicology is a field of genetic toxicology studying especially the effect of exposure of NPs on DNA damage in the cells. Currently used new methodological tools and knowledge in molecular biology allowed to go deeply to the machanism of the NPs action.
In this mini-review we focus on studies analyzing the effect of NPs exposure on the epigenetic regulation of gene expression via small noncoding miRNAs molecules. In total 14 studies published between the years 2011-2015 were found for this topic. Main findings showed the following: (i) miRNAs pattern is clearly dependent on the exposure conditions (time, dose and type of NPs), (ii)selected methodological approach is crucial for range and quality of output, (iii)comparison of various tissues revealed differences in miRNA expression, (iv) the sensitivity of organisms depend strictly on their state (e.g. pregnancy). This literature search also revealed lots of gaps and challenges for future research as follows: (i) more NPs is needed to be tested, (ii) cell lines with normal karyotype should be preferable used, (iii)higher attention to human studies is needed, (iv) studies focused on the extracellular miRNAs are completely missing, (v) higher complexity of research involving new technologies can be also highly profitable aim.
