An invited commentary on the targeted review by Ravinet et al. found in the same special issue of the journal. The special issue topic is genomic speciation studies. While praising the clarity of the targeted review I point out that genome scans of divergence measures will produce long-tailed auto-correlated distributions. If null simulations (without speciation process) were divergence scanned they would produce similar patterns. This is of concern because divergence scan 'outliers' are not tested for significance in speciation studies.
