This study analyzes Alu polymorphisms in both sedentary and nomadic populations across the African Sahel in scope to provide an archaeogenetic contribution to issues concerning the origin of Western African pastoralism. Our results show some affinity of the Western Fulani pastoralists to Eastern Africans leading pastoral lifestyle as well. On the other hand, the relationships of the Fulani pastoralists with the Northern Africans are not that evident as for the uniparental genetic systems such as mitochondrial DNA and Y chromosome. We suggest the contemporary Fulani pastoralists might be descendants of an ancient Eastern African population that crossed the Sahara where they shortly admixed with a population of the Eurasian ancestry.
