The article describes the political and social situation in Haiti at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. At that time a rebellion against the contemporary colonial regime took place. During the rebellion certain layer of inhabitants with African roots turned from being slaves to leaders of society. The aim of the article is to point out the possibility of purposeful manipulation of social identity with material culture by the socially and politically powerful. The local ruler Henri Christophe (1767-1820), originally a slave washing dishes in a hotel, became in 1811 a king of the north part of the island and subsequently sought to gain respect in European and American states. He hoped to achieve this by copying the material and spiritual examples of Continental nobility (especially the French one). Although he did not reach this goal the time of his reign has left in Haiti material remains which we would, without the knowledge of the ethno-historical context, be connected to Europeans.
