Václav Mencl je všeobecně pokládán za jednoho z nejvýznamnějších historiků a teoretiků architektury středověku. Méně se už ale ví, že také jeho zájem o architekturu raného novověku je zcela příkladný a metodicky přínosný. Dosud nevydaný rukopis o renesančních a barokních zámcích u nás lze označit za určité prolegomenon k výzkumu dispozic architektury a otázek vnitřní organizace a prostorové skladby zámků. Z metod pro analýzu vnitřků budov Mencl uvádí rešerše archivních dokumentů, inventářů, urbářů, knih účtů, ale i korespondence a zápisky konkrétních osob – v rukopise je to např. urbář zámku v Kostelci nad Černými lesy, zámku v Litomyšli nebo deník Jana Josefa hraběte z Vrtby. Excerpuje ale i z dobových traktátů o architektuře (Antoine Le Pautre, Andrea Palladio, Vincenzo Scamozzi, Karel Eusebius z Lichtensteina ad.).

Václav Mencl is generally regarded as one of the most important historians and theoreticians of medieval architecture. However, it is less well known that his interest in early modern architecture is also quite exemplary and methodologically beneficial. His unpublished manuscript on Renaissance and Baroque castles in Czech lands can be described as a kind of prolegomenon to the research on the layout of architecture and the questions of the internal organisation and spatial composition of castles. Among the methods for analysing the interiors of buildings, Mencl mentions research of archival documents, inventories, town registers, account books, as well as correspondence and notes of specific persons - in the manuscript, for example, the inventory of the castle in Kostelec nad Černými lesy, the castle in Litomyšl or the diary of Jan Josef Count of Vrtba. He also excerpts from contemporary treatises on architecture (Antoine Le Pautre, Andrea Palladio, Vincenzo Scamozzi, Karel Eusebius of Lichtenstein, etc.).
