Die deutschsprachige Publikation bietet eine Sammlung von Beiträgen, die sich mit dem Thema der Pfarrkirchen und ihrer monumentalen Ausstattung in Mitteleuropa im 16. bis 18. Jahrhundert befassen. Die Autoren wollen verschiedene Aspekte der barocken Ausschmückung ländlicher Kirchen in einem breiteren kulturellen und religiösen Kontext erfassen und die spezifische Funktion ländlicher Sakralbauten bei der Vermittlung kultureller und künstlerischer Impulse zwischen Zentrum und Peripherie herausarbeiten. Nicht zuletzt wollen sie die Aufmerksamkeit auf einen wichtigen Teil des europäischen Kulturerbes lenken, der oft übersehen wird und daher unter den gegenwärtigen sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Bedingungen oft bedroht ist. Das Buch wurde in Zusammenarbeit des Instituts für Kunstgeschichte der Tschechischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und des Instituts für die Erforschung der Habsburgermonarchie und des Balkanraums ÖAW mit Kunsthistorikerinnen und Kunsthistorikern aus Österreich, Tschechien, Deutschland, Ungarn und Polen erstellt.

The publication in German language offers a collection of contributions focused on the issue of parish churches and their decoration in Central Europe in the 16th-18th centuries. The authors aim to capture various aspects of Baroque decoration of rural churches in a broader cultural and religious context and to capture the specific function of rural sacred buildings in mediating cultural and artistic impulses between the centre and the periphery. Last but not least, they want to draw attention to an important part of Europe's cultural heritage that is often overlooked and therefore often threatened in the current social and economic conditions. The book was prepared in cooperation of the Institute of Art History, Czech Academy of Sciences, and the Institut für die Erforschung der Habsburgermonarchie und des Balkanraumes ÖAW, together with historians and art historians from Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary and Poland.
