Door de grote datasets die gegenereerd worden in metabolomics studies, in combinatie met de ingewikkelde studiedesigns die vaak nodig zijn om subtiele verschillen in metabolietprofielen te kunnen detecteren, zijn standaard multivariate technieken niet meer afdoende. Dit geldt voor alle fasen van de data-analyse in metabolomics studies: voor zowel de verkennende fase, als de modelfase, als de validatiefase, toont Carina Rubingh aan. Doordat ze in haar onderzoek data uit de praktijk (real life data) gebruikte, zijn de problemen die aan de orde komen herkenbaar voor vele onderzoekers. Rubinghs oplossingen zijn direct toepasbaar en beperken zich niet alleen tot metabolomics studies, maar zijn van toepassing voor alle onderzoeksgebieden waar soortgelijke data gegenereerd wordt.
