Rogier Reijmers onderzocht een eiwit (heparan sulfaat proteoglycanen) dat op het celmembraan zit of wordt uitgescheiden in de extracellulaire matrix. Door modificatie van het eiwit kunnen cellen stoffen als cytokines en groeifactoren aan zich binden. Cellen gebruiken deze stoffen om hun eigen overleving en groei te versterken, en te stimuleren. Dit geldt voor gezonde cellen, maar ook voor multipele myeloma, een vorm van bloedkanker. Deze ziekte staat centraal in Reijmers' onderzoek. Als het eiwit wordt weggehaald, blijken de kankercellen gevoeliger te worden voor chemotherapie en kan met een lagere dosis worden volstaan. Reijmers onderzocht dit in een muismodel. Probleem is dat gezonde cellen hetzelfde eiwit hebben. Om het eiwit selectief te kunnen weghalen, werden genetisch gemodificeerde kankercellen in muizen voorbehandeld. Hoe deze behandeling bij mensen uitgevoerd kan worden is nog onduidelijk. Een ‘voordeel' van deze kankersoort is volgens Reijmers dat het ziekteproces in vier fasen verloopt. Pas in de laatste fase is sprake van uitzaaiingen. De kankercellen blijven dus relatief lang in het beenmerg en dit biedt openingen voor een voorbehandeling.
